We have led two delegations to witness what is happening ourselves. In San Diego, we heard firsthand from the migrants about the terror they are escaping and, earlier at the detention centers in Texas, we saw with our own eyes the cruelty and disregard for human rights our government has inculcated with its zero-tolerance policy.
Seeing the current plight of asylum seekers, members of our community can’t help but be reminded of Jewish refugees in the past. The American Jewish experience and values of our faith compel us to advocate for compassionate and rational immigration laws. Our community has long held a consensus position in favor of “a generous and compassionate American immigration policy is fundamental to our nation’s commitment to pluralism and its immigrant roots.”
